BUSH, Jenny

Melbourne, Victoria

Jenny Bush has always been drawn to the transparency of glass and the play of light though the colours. The order of stacked straight strips of fused glass appealed greatly to the mathematical precision of a science-based brain.

“I  commenced glass fusing and slumping at Melbourne’s CAE in 2002 following a life as a pharmacist and mother. However, following a workshop by the visiting American artist Catherine Newell in 2006, I branched out into ‘painting’ on glass with glass powders. The results approximate ink and wash painting that I have always admired. The ability to stack and fuse multiple layers of work into 3D blocks particularly excites, as it enables me to move towards sculpture without being a sculptor.”

The glass works created by Bush are produced by applying finely ground coloured glass powders to base sheets of glass. The powder is sifted on to it’s background, moved and removed with brushes and rubber-tip tools to leave an image that is then fired to fuse it to the backing sheet of glass. An image may take many applications and firings to evolve.
