In 2010 Samantha Cuffe completed her Honours Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts: Major-Glass, Monash University and received Glass Plus Gallery’s Award for Outstanding Glass Student 2010.
“Body image still plays a major role in today’s society, when a person steps out into the exterior world their image is the first impression others see and as a result they are constantly judged by that image on a superficial level. However, a person’s physical expression is distorted by a myriad of influences so as to render the person’s true form almost invisible.
My intention for this body of work is to discuss, how being under the pressure of society’s gaze moulds peoples appearance and behaviour as they hope to be understood and accepted. Through the use of mirrored glass I have explored the subtleties of perception and distorted observation as people look at their reflective selves and the bodies of others. “
