Des Fankhauser completed a Diploma of Visual Arts: Sculpture in 2004 and in 2008 completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Glass from Monash University.

In 2008 Fankhauser received the Glass Plus Gallery Award for Outstanding Glass Student at Monash University.

With reference to his current work Fankhauser says-

"This body of work explores memory in its transient and volatile nature. I am particularly interested in the connections it holds to identify and what transpires once this crucial device becomes either lost or damaged."
